You have a ChatGPT conversation worth showing someone. The built-in share link takes about four seconds to create — and for plenty of situations it is exactly right. But share links have sharp edges that only show up later, usually when the person on the other end actually needs the content.
Here is how sharing works, where it falls down, and when a file is the better call.
Creating a share link
Open the conversation, click the share icon, and create the link. Anyone with the URL can read a snapshot of the conversation up to the moment you shared it — they do not need a ChatGPT account, and they do not see your name unless you include it.
What share links don't do
- They do not stay current: the link shows the conversation as it was when you shared it, not what you added afterwards.
- They do not survive cleanup: delete the underlying conversation (or the link itself) and the URL dies for everyone you sent it to.
- They do not carry everything: some content types in a conversation may not come through the shared view.
- They do not work offline, in print, or as an attachment in a formal document trail.
Treat every link as potentially public
A share link is an unlisted URL, not a private document. Anyone it is forwarded to can read it, and in 2025 ChatGPT briefly offered an option that let shared conversations be indexed by search engines — a feature that was withdrawn after users discovered their chats appearing in Google results.
The lesson stands regardless of current settings: once a conversation leaves your account as a link, you no longer control where it travels.
When to send a file instead
A file puts you back in control. A PDF looks the same forever, works without an account, attaches to email and project trackers, and cannot be killed by deleting a chat. A Word document lets the recipient build on the content. Markdown drops into wikis and repos.
