Short answer: yes. ChatGPT keeps your conversations in your account until you delete them, and they sync across your devices. The longer answer is more interesting, because “saved” means less than most people assume.

What ChatGPT keeps by default
Every normal conversation is stored in your chat history automatically. Close the tab, switch from laptop to phone, come back a month later — the conversation is still there, attached to your account.
That persistence is genuinely useful, and it is easy to treat the sidebar as an archive. But it is an archive you access at someone else's discretion, in one format, behind one login.
When conversations disappear
- You delete them. Deleted chats leave your sidebar immediately and are typically removed from provider systems within about 30 days.
- You used a temporary chat. Temporary conversations are designed not to enter your history at all — close them and they are gone.
- Your account goes away. Losing access to the account — deletion, a lockout, an employer-managed workspace being wound down — takes the whole archive with it.
- Policies change. Retention behaviour is set by the provider and has changed before; the history you rely on operates under rules you do not control.
Saved is not the same as yours
A conversation in your history exists in exactly one place, in one format, readable only through the ChatGPT interface. You cannot open it in Word, commit it to a repo, attach it to an email, or read it if the service is down.
For throwaway chats, that is fine. For the conversation where you finally worked out your positioning, debugged the gnarly migration, or drafted the difficult email — treating the sidebar as permanent storage is a quiet risk.
